There’s a valid reason that so many adults regret not sticking with their music lessons as children and more so why they are hesitant to learn a new musical skill as adults. Fear. Fear that they will be compared to old dog learning new tricks, fear of being compared to a young child excelling at the same repertoire, fear that they are simply too old to learn.
However, the truth is, we are never too old to learn an instrument and no matter what age we begin at there will be challenging moments, plateau moments and moments of staggering growth. As a teen, my teachers always commented on how musical My interpretation was and how naturally fluent my bow hand moved across the strings. In contrast, I also recall my challenges with intonation and moving my finger a micro-millimetre rapidly to create beautiful tone.
We all have something that we wish to improve upon and no one’s challenges are greater than another’s and time waits for no man. Don’t rob yourself of the joy of learning a new skill. Give yourself the gift of music, whether it is joining a choir, learning to play piano or violin or even dabbling in a bit of music theory.
As CS Lewis once stated, “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.”
